RIVERBOAT CRUISE WITH LUNCH: If you're looking for a peaceful, relaxing way to spend a couple of hours, you may get more than you bargain for when you step aboard the Belle of Cincinnati. A luncheon cruise down the Ohio River on a gorgeous afternoon with a warm breeze whipping across your face is more than a soothing way of taking an extended lunch hour. If you're not careful, you'll learn a lot about Cincinnati's past. For instance, did you know that Mount Adams was named in honor of President John Quincy Adams, who visited the city in 1848 to dedicate the Cincinnati Observ-atory Center? Or that Stephen Foster wrote one of history's most famous folk songs, "Oh Susanna," while living in the Queen City? "Banjo Bob" relates these and other interesting anecdotes while the Belle, a three-deck paddleboat in its first summer season with BB Riverboats, steams steadily east past dozens of downtown |
landmarks. Bob, clad in 1840s garb, creates an environment that would make Mark Twain, the namesake of another BB Riverboat, feel right at home. On a riverboat cruise, the scenery moves constantly, providing an unusual dynamic to the dining experience. Al Bernstein, who owns BB Riverboats, was mindful of that when he opened his business in 1980. The river has been in Bernstein's blood since he was a teenager in the late 60s. He worked on the Delta Queen for Betty Blake, who would later co-found BB River-boats with Al and his father, Ben. "I was 17 or 18 years old at the time, and it was just a great experience," Bernstein says of his summer traveling the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. "I didn't really know that the river would come back into my life as quickly as it did, but it did." A decade later the Bernstein's, who had owned and operated a restaurant since 1961, decided to take that concept to the water, with help from Blake, in 1980. "One of the advantages we had being in the restaurant business is that we were food people and we learned the boat business," Bernstein said. The meals, consequently, are simple but satisfying buffet-style fare. What patrons pay for is the experience of leaving the rat race on land for some time on the water, an activity that is as woven into the city's heritage as the Reds. "We are a huge steamboat buff area," Bernstein said. "There's probably more steamboat groupies that live in Cincinnati than anywhere else in the world. I think it's a sort of romantic way, a nice way to |
take your wife or your girlfriend out, because I think
it's relaxing, it's informal, you eat good, you can dance if you want, you can just stand on the rail if you want, you can talk…this is the main place when it comes to riverboat heritage." TRANSPORTATION BY AIR: Muley/Betty suggest that if you are flying to the reunion rather than fly into Cincinnati you might want to check other airports such as, Dayton, Columbia, Louisville, or Indianapolis, because the rates are much better, but you would need to rent a car to Erlanger, KY. It cost them $155.00 more by flying into Cincinnati when they visited the area to set up our reunion hotel. Just a thought! FROM MY DESK: I am sure that you might have noticed that there is a new question that I have added to our A/1/7 membership application and that is I would like to know who has retired from the Marine Corps and/or Marine Corps Reserve, rank at retirement and the date retired. And, not to forget our favorite warriors "our Corpsman!!" The reason for this request is I had a situation where I was assisting an association member and this information wasn't available to me. So please when you send your annual dues to me please, please use the application so I will have the latest up-to-date information. Thanks and Semper Fi! Shifty I received this email from Bob Ramsey last month as a follow up to an email seeking some infor-mation about a former Marine. "Shifty, I appreciate the quick turn-around on my e-mails. I passed on |
