"SCI paid tribute to its World War II Veterans in an awards presentation during the President's Cocktail Reception at their 2005 Annual Hunters Convention in Reno, NV. The reception was held at the Reno Hilton Ballroom.

SCI members who were veterans of service in the armed forces of any allied nation during World War II were eligible to receive the SCI WW II Medal of Valor at the ceremony. The medal, which was Specially die-struck for this event, was made available by the courtesy of Trijicon, Inc., which was an exhibitor at the convention.

Trijicon is a major supplier of illuminated optical sights for U. S. Military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan. Triijicon high-qualifty, illuminated riflescopes for hunters were on display at their booth." Thanks, Tom

ASSISTANCE RENDERED!

I was called on to assist Scott Satterfield set up the funeral arrangements for his dad "Russell (Russ) Satterfield, U.S. Marine Corps (Retired). He wasn't making any progress with the people in charge of the Riverside Memorial Cemetery, Riverside, CA. It was Russ' last wishes to have a full military funeral, but the authorities in charge were only going to provide a four man (not Marines) burial detail.

I called Colonel Steward Navarre USMC, Chief of Staff, MCB, Camp Pendleton-Oceanside, to see if he could assist Scott. He took my call and with several telephone calls and emails he instructed the MCB Public Affairs staff to get involve, which they did. A full Marine Corps funeral detail was provided and they did an out-standing job as always and in keeping with the traditions of our Corps.

Colonel Navarre was our Guest Speaker at our 10th Annual Reunion in San Diego
last year, along with his wife Yana. I owe the Colonel for his participation and without his assistance Russ' last wishes would not have been carried out. Thanks Colonel! Truly the Corps is FAMILY! Shifty

MORE ABOUT EMBLEMS

The first emblem to be worn by U. S. Marines was approved by the Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Franklin D. Roosevelt on 5 August 1918, at the request of Colonel Wendell C. "Buck" Neville during WW I. It was an Eagle/Globe/ Anchor stamped on a round button worn by the U. S. Army Collar Device. The Colonel was most concerned that Marines, since they had to wear the U. S. Army Uniforms, could not be recognized as Marines! Colonel Neville fought with the 5th Marines in WW I and later promoted to Major General. He was awarded the Medal of Honor during the Mexican Campaign April 21 - 22, 1914 at Vera Cruz. He died on 8 July 1930 at the age of 60 and is buried in Arlington Cemetery with his wife. He was the Commandant of the Marine Corps 1929 - 1930.
