FROM MY DESK: In our October Reunion Special Newsletter I stated that Mrs. Janet Smith daughter Janie attended our banquet. You know how you can always get twins mixed up? Well that is just what I did! Her daughter JEANIE attended and we are happy that she could be there as both her girls were to attend but Janie had another engagement and couldn't be with us. Sorry Mrs. Smith and JEANIE!!!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 19, 2005 - VA Warns of Telephone Prescription Scam WASHINGTON - The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) is warning veterans not to give credit card numbers over the phone to callers claiming to update VA prescription information.

"Some unscrupulous scammers have targeted America's veterans, especially our older veterans," said the Honorable R. James Nicholson, Secretary of Veterans Affairs. "VA does not call veterans and ask them to disclose personal financial information over the phone."

The latest scam, currently centered in the Midwest, comes from callers who identify themselves as working for the "Patient Care Group." They say VA recently changed procedures for dispensing prescriptions and ask for the veteran's credit card number. "VA has not changed its processes for dispensing prescription medicines," Nicholson said. "And we've
definitely not changed our long-standing commitment to protect the personal information of our veterans."

Veterans with questions about VA services should contact the nearest VA medical center or call, toll-free, 1-877-222-8387. People wishing to receive e-mail from VA with the latest news releases and updated fact sheets can subscribe at the following Internet address:

MORE ABOUT HERBERT SPALDING
I received this email from Eddie Arechiga (portion of this article appeared in the October NL.

"Hi Shifty, I received an email from a lady former Marine named Jenni (Spalding) Lenz. She wrote to ask if I knew her father, Herbert Spalding, who served with A17 and fought on Hill 104 on 28May52. Her Dad died in 1994 and she sez he was still a gung-ho Marine when he answered his last roll call. He was buried wearing his favorite USMC ring on his finger. From her info he arrived Korea with the February 1952 draft and remained until sometime in 1953.

I personally do not remember Herb Spalding altho' the name sounds familiar. There must be guys out there that do remember him well. If they do, Jenni would love to hear from them. She desperately wants to know all she

can about her Dad's service in Korea. She's particularly curious about the last words he uttered. She said that as he died
he whispered, "Uigongbu, forgive us."

I wrote Jenni and told her I had no personal knowledge of Uigongbu other than the fact that it's a town 20 miles north of Seoul on an important crossroad that leads directly to Seoul. To my knowledge 1stMarDiv had no significant actions there during the period her dad was in Korea. I did however; email her some of the details of the fight on Hill 104. I'll be sending her a more descriptive package as soon as I get it together.

If any one remembers Herb Spalding, her address is:

Thanks, Eddie" Shifty
I received the following article from our own Colonel Stan Rauh USMC (Ret).

THE EAGLE, GLOBE AND ANCHOR "The Marine Corps is steeped in traditions, young and old, and Marines thrive on our traditions. In 1990, one of these traditions was started, and I hope it remains, forever, in the lore of the Marine Corps.

The Eagle, Globe and Anchor of our Corps has changed throughout the years, and the present emblem was established on 22 June 1954, by executive Order, signed by President Dwight Eisenhower. The design was by Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepard Jr.

From this date on, all enlisted Marines wore an emblem with the
