EMAIL FROM
"DOC-SHORTY'S SON:

Hello Capt. Shifty, Thank you for your note. It is very kind of you. He passed away at 8:15 am on Monday April 5th. He had had a problem with his liver and kidneys for the last while and had them checked about two weeks ago again and the doctor said they had gotten noticeably worse. He had been having a very difficult time with his feet and legs with a serious attack of gout and general pain. The doctor earlier had prescribed some different medicine for the pain which helped for awhile but about 10:00 Sunday night he couldn't move his legs so we took him to the hospital emergency. I stayed with him that night and about 4:00 am his heart rate dropped to 20 and there was no blood pressure. They restored all that to normal but it happened again two more times between 5 and 6 and the heart rate was getting less and less each time. Finally it happened again and they did what they could to revive him with the "paddles" and some direct shots to the heart. They said there might be some other things they could try but I told them to stop that enough was enough and he officially passed away about a 5 min's later. (I do believe the governments ignorance and failure to acknowledge the effects of freezing on feet, legs, hands and their effect on internal body parts was in large part responsible for my fathers pain, discomfort and general suffering and contributed to the manner and timing of my fathers death.)
I want you to know that when we started going to these reunions for the A17 and the Chosin Few is when my father started to open up about his war experiences. Myself, my two sons and my sister each got an opportunity to accompany him on about half a dozen or more. They will all be very special memories to each of us but the one where you got his purple heart presented to him at Myrtle Beach after a 50 some odd year wait with my two boys in the audience is the one that I am most grateful for. My father never was one to show much emotion but when he thanked me with a tear in his eye is when I realized how much it meant to him as well. I hope you have the very best that life has to offer and please know the special place you hold with my family and me. I will e-mail a copy of his obits tomorrow or the next. Thank you sincerely. Pete and family of "Doc" Olivas USN Ret - A/1/7 Korea"
