Old Town State Historic Park - San Diego's Old Town brings back early San Diego history with many original 1800's buildings and is known for its Bazaar del Mundo and Mexican restaurants. Don't want to "scare" anyone away from visiting Old Town but the famous Whaley House is located here. Listed by the United States Depart- ment of Commerce as an authentic haunted house, it is rich in San Diego history, and, haunted or not, it is an interesting place to visit with an outstanding group of knowledgeable docents.

Balboa Park - Balboa Park is often referred to as the "Smithsonian of the West". Among its 15 museums are the San Diego Automotive Museum (50s favorites included) and the San Diego Aerospace Museum. For art, music, science and theatre, etc. it is all there.

San Diego Zoo - Considered one of the best zoos in the world, it is a great event for visitors of all ages and probably one of the first places visitors to San Diego head to.

The Gaslamp Quarter - Located in Downtown San Diego, the Gaslamp Quarter is an outstanding example of inner city restoration. The restored Victorian-era buildings now contain shops, restaurants, nightclubs and theaters.

Coronado Island -Probably best known for the Hotel Del Coronado, Coronado Island is also home to Naval Air Station North Island. A stop at the "Hotel Del" is definitely worthwhile.

HAVING SAID ALL THIS,
HOW CAN YOU GET THERE!!

A possibility to consider is Old Town
Trolley Tours. The tour makes 8 stops where you can disembark and visit Old Town, Seaport Village, Horton Plaza/Gaslamp Quarter, Balboa Park, Coronado and the San Diego Zoo or you can stay on-board for a two-hour continuous narrated tour.

Friday, Oct. 7th, 0700 - 1500 - MCRD San Diego -

Our group will be picked up at our hotel at 0700 by MCRD base busses (same kind used by the Boots). (Continental breakfast will be available at the hotel prior to departing.)

We will participate in morning colors, followed by joining the families and friends of the graduating recruits at their graduation ceremony.

Other highlights of the day will include lunch at the Mess Hall, a visit to MCRD's Command Museum featuring the Korea Room and a visit to the PX along with a narrated "windshield" bus tour of the base.

The Korea Room at MCRD is the culmination of the hard work and dedication of Col. Nathan Smith USMC (Ret), former Commanding Officer of A-1-7 from 28 March 1951 to 2 June 1951. Col. Smith was wounded and medevaced from Korea on 29 May 1951. Our visit to the Museum is sure to bring back memories of our days in Korea.

We will return to our hotel at approximately 1500 in time to get ready for the evening's event.

Friday, Oct. 7th, 1700 - 2100 - POLYNESIAN LUAU
Many of us have been to a Luau before-perhaps some have not. However, we have NEVER been to a Luau together! It will be an opportunity to be entertained, have a few laughs, and enjoy a Poolside Polynesian Buffet.

Entertainment will be furnished by the award winning Heali'i's Polynesian Revue featuring song and dance from Hawaii, Samoa, Tahiti, Fiji and New Zealand. Might be a good idea to "practice up" on your hula dancing!!!!!

The Hawaiian Buffet prepared by the Holiday Inn Bayside and served poolside will feature sliced Roast Pork in Papaya Sauce, Teriyaki chicken, Mahi Mahi, and lots of other Luau favorites.

LOOK TO THE NEXT ISSUE OF THE NEWSLETTER FOR DETAILS ON THE WELCOME RECEPTION AND BANQUET.

WORDS OF WISDOM

No man can always be right. So the struggle is to do one's best, to keep the brain and conscience clear, never to be swayed by unworthy motives or inconsequential reasons, but to strive to unearth the basic factors involved, then do one's duty." Author Unknown

ONCE A MARINE ALWAYS A MARINE

U.S. Marines are the most peculiar breed of human beings I have ever witnessed. They treat service as if it was some kind of cult, plastering their emblem on almost everything they own, making themselves look like insane fanatics with haircuts to ungentlemanly lengths worshipping their Commandant
