7TH ANNUAL REUNION - ST. LOUIS, MO Well, another annual reunion has come and gone. Forty-seven Marine Warriors and Fifty-five guests mustered in St. Louis on 20 - 23 October 2002. This wasn't the largest number to register but we had a grand time anyway. On Monday the group boarded buses for our tour. When we arrived at the Arch we gathered in front of the "Old Cathedral." Then we toured the famous Arch (the gateway to the west). Most all rode the tram to the top and looked out over the city of St. Louis and sounding area, to include the Mississippi River. It was a gorgeous day and one could see thirty miles either way. The ride up to the top, which is 630 feet high, took only four minutes in a large dryer basket that held five occupants and then only three and one-half minutes to come down. The normal time spent in the arch is on the average of sixty minutes. After touring the Arch we went to the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis. This is a grand building where Pope John Paul visited on his trip to America. The construction, under the direction and supervision of Archbishop Glennon, was begun in 1907. The architecture of the exterior is Romanesque, with granite walls, rose windows and two massive towers. The main dome and pitched roofs, covered in brilliant green tiles, are a promi- nent sight in the St. Louis skyline. |
The Cathedral with soaring domes, soffits, arches, pendentives and lunettes that are paved with brilliant mosaics which covers more than 83,000 square feet. These were created by twenty artists and installed over a period of seventy-five years. It was breath taking just to stand in that great building looking at all of the art and workmanship. Those who toured the Cathedral came away with a great appreciation.
We want to thank Gabe and Virginia Conde for chairing this reunion and for a job well done. Virginia replacement and now has another health problem but that did not slow this lady down. She was with us the most of the reunion and attended the Banquet. Trust you will feel better soon Virginia. Both Gabe's and Virginia's family members pitched in an assisted in setting up the hospitality room. We owe them so much for all their effort.
