THE CITY TOUR:

We visited the City's Myriad Botanical Gardens. This was a tropical rain forest with every kind of flowers such as orchids and cacti. There were palms trees, waterfalls and vegetations growing everywhere. Many lizards and butterflies were seen throughout the gardens as we toured.

We had lunch at the Sleepy Hollow Restaurant and again this was a fantastic meal served family style. If one didn't get enough to eat it was their own fault!

We also toured 45th Infantry Division Museum. All present found this most interesting with displays for each period of war with uniforms, medals, and weapons. Many enemy displays were available as well as our own.

Outside they had a display of tanks, planes, artillery pieces, as well as some captured enemy equipment. We could have spent more time at this site also!

ANNUAL MEETING

At our annual meeting Muley and friends held a Memorial Service for all A/1/7 Marines and wives that have passed on in recent years. This was a very moving ceremony!

You cannot say, you must not say That they are dead. They are just away!

With a cherry smile and a wave of the hand, They have wondered into an unknown land…

And left us dreaming very fair, It needs must be,
Since they linger there….

So think of them faring on, as dear
In the love of there and the love of here…
Think of them still,
As the same, and say;
They are not dead, they are just away

OTHER BUSINESS

A motion was made and approved that I (Shifty) would be authorized to advance an amount of $500.00 to the New Marine Corps Heritage Center to be located at Quantico in memory of General Raymond G. Davis, USMC (Retired), who passed on 3 September 2003. General Davis was very much involved in this upcoming project and it was felt that A/17 Marines should be a part of it!

This amount would be reimbursed from contributions from our membership as received. If you would like to participate in this memorial gift please send your contribution to me as soon as possible marked Gen. Davis Fund.

It was decided that we would hold our 10th Annual Reunion (2006) at Quantico, VA in order that we can tour the center, which is to be completed in November 2005.

NO SUCH TITLE AS AN EX-MARINE!

"To whom it may concern: A recent news article posted by Otis Willie of The American War Library referred to the FORMER Marine Officer who will assume the NASA Leadership as an EX-Marine.

I thank Otis for keeping us all informed about recent news events concerning Our Beloved Corps. However, please permit me to submit a correction to this latest event: To me, and many other Marines, the only EX--Marines are those who received a Dishonor-able, Undesirable, or Bad Conduct Discharge. Any Marine who served his Country and Corps Honorably for his or her term of Enlistment is officially designated A FORMER MARINE... and not an EX-Marine. Those who feel as I do might want to send an email to the newspaper author of this story and let him know the correct way to identify Marines who served our Great Country HONORABLY!

Semper Fidelis,
Raymond E. Kania, Sr

IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow, Between the crosses row on row That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
