FROM MY DESK I received this email from George DeSha's addition to the story of "Our Doc's" in the July News-letter. "June 25, 2006 - Hello Shifty, I enjoyed the story on our Navy Corpsmen in the July issue of newsletter. I would like to add something if I can. I have records in front of me on "Roll of Honor" of the KIA's from 1950-1953 from Able Co., and awards given to some of them. These " Doc's" were: Charles Doerr, Peter Frosley, Donald Hovatter, and Wylie Shafer All four of these Corpsmen were killed in action. Wylie Shafer was attached to my squad on 104. He was killed during our fight for the hill. He was helping wounded Marines during mortar attacks and firefights. There were 7 other Marines wounded during these attacks, risking their lives out in the open helping Marines. Can you believe none got any kind of award we know of, if so I would like to know if any did? Shafer who was killed helping wounded Marines didn't get any kind of award either. This is a shame, and Lord only knows how many other times this same thing happened in other companies also. I don't have other company's records to know that. There we a number of awards given out from 104, but these Doc's were left out. All I can say is God knows what they did and may God Bless them all. Thanks, George DeSha 2nd Squad Leader on Hill 104 1stPlt Able Co May 28, 1952" I received this information from Bob Licker 1stPlt 11/50 - 11/51 "Gentlemen: I am forwarding a request for support from Colonel Conlin, Commanding Officer, Weapons Field Training Battalion at Edson Field in Camp Pendleton. Please read his request and the Chaplain's |
program that the Colonel would like us to get involved with at his facility. It sounds like a very worthwhile program. Please give me your thoughts and who would like to get involved. To: Bob Licker From: Col Christopher Conlin Bob, the message below from the Chaplain gives a good synopsis of what the Vet-to-Vet cookouts entail. The one he describes below was a test run he did to see what the turn out would be. Pretty good from the report below. We plan to do the same thing every Monday at about the same time. I suggest that you offer it up to the Chosin Few (and any other interested Veteran Groups like Able 1/7) as an opportunity. Free chow, a chance to interact with a rich group of WFTBn instructors and DI's, and the opportunity to mentor our latest generation of combat Vets. To sweeten the deal, I offer the chance for visiting Vets to tour Edison Range and see our recruits training. Seeing recruits dinging targets from the 500-yard line or hearing the familiar tone of a DI encouraging his charge through an infiltration course will probably bring back some distant memories. As always, my hatch is always open to our Corps' legacy. I would only ask for some indication of the interest level. And if there is desire for a tour, I would propose we have those interested come in early (1000) and we will hook them up before chow. Thanks again for all your support. And please let me know if you or the Chosin Few/ Able 1/7 Marines need any thing from us. Semper Fi! Chris" Col Christopher C. Please note that this envelope has the last of the five "Distinguished Marine Stamps" you have received since they were issued. I trust you have enjoyed them and have saved them for your collection?
